Conflict of Values in Social Sciences

Question: Discuss about the Conflict of Values in Social Sciences. Answer: Introduction: Nowadays, a conflict of value has become the major subject of concern for the society. A conflict of value takes place when a particular value is accepted by a society but also rejected by certain groups of the same society. In other words, it also can be said that, a conflict of value occurs due to the opinion differences of the people. These differences are the results of long-held beliefs and word views that are accepted by the people of a particular society (Cropper, Jackson Keys, 2012). Along with this, a conflict of value cannot be resolved by the facts because of these value conflicts are belief-based and not fact-based. On the other hand, a conflict of value is increasing within the society on the regular basis. Ethnic diversity and globalization are major reasons of value conflicts. For case, the differences in core values of two distinct groups play a significant role to create value conflicts within the society. Along with this, conflict of values creates interpersonal as well as intergroup conflict at different levels of society. For example, the differences on marriage customs create value conflicts between the young generations and the elders. Both young and elders do not accept same marriage customs. The elders want to follow traditional marriage customs. But, young generations want to follow modern marriage customs (Dreu, 2014). In this way, the opinion differences create conflict of values between the two major groups of the society. In addition to this, conflict of values is very unsafe for the society. But, people are not ready to accept this fact. It is because of people are reluctant to negotiate or compromise the morals and values that they are learning from their childhood. The values and beliefs have become major part of rational of the people. Along with this, people mainly emphasis on their personal, moral, religious values and also unwilling to compromise their beliefs or faiths only for the society (Callahan Jennings, 2012). Moreover, values hold beliefs of the people and these beliefs are based on cultural traditions, family religious teachings and personal experiences of people. Apart from this, the conflicts of value are very difficult to handle. The society faces a lot of problems to deal with value conflicts. The main reason behind it is that values are related to the feelings and emotions of the people. In this situation, if the society makes efforts to resolve a value of conflict then it will hurt the feelings emotions of the people of that society. Moreover, it is also clear that, nobody will be ready to compromise their values and beliefs only for the others. The efforts of the society may create major differences among the people (Burt, 2010). For this reason, value conflicts have become a serious problem to the society. One group proceeds according to its values norms whereas the other group holds its acts according to its values norms. This situation has been led to conflict within society. On the other hand, the conflicts of value must be removed for the welfare of the society. The government of the nation must develop effective strategies to remove the value conflicts in an effective and a more comprehensive manner. The government should create strict rules and regulation to resolve value conflicts for the welfare of the society. Apart from this, the government must consider the values, beliefs, and norms of the people in order to develop common values for them. It is true that people will not change or negotiate their values, beliefs, and norms only for others (Laszlo Wilbur, 2014). In that case, the government of a nation may oblige them to follow common traditions, customs, norms, beliefs, and values to resolve all the conflicts in an effective and an appropriate manner. In addition to this, the values and norms developed by the government would be beneficial to resolve value conflicts among people. All the people will follow all the traditions, customs, beliefs, and values happily and will enjoy all the festivals/events communally. Along with this, if the government of nation does not take appropriate actions then a conflict of value will be constant. The value conflicts will be hazardous for the society (Brewer, 2013). For that reason, it is recommended that, people should enjoy the values customs of other people to give respect them. Moreover, the government must develop and implement common values and also obliged people to follow those values for the welfare of the society. References Brewer, J.D.
